So far, in my occasional passing of tech news blogs and sites, I have seen a lot of mention of the iPad. According to http://labs.chitika.com/ipad/ it is estimated that over 1 million iPads have been sold. So far however, I have not seen one in the wild, and have only seen pictures. So what I don’t see is if so many have been sold, what are people really using their iPad for? By the looks of it, they are not sitting at the library, in study hall, or in the park browsing the internet or reading a book on them, so what are they being used for? Do they make a good paperweight? So far I have yet to see.

Curiosity got the best of me this morning when I got on my Ubuntu machine. When I looked to the address bar and was about to type in the address, I remembered that Ubuntu 10 was in development, and wondered what the start page would look like. So I went to http://start.ubuntu.com/10.04/ and was quite surprised to find that it had Yahoo! Search written in place of the regular Google banner. After a quick Google search, I then found out what was happening. It seems that according to http://lwn.net/Articles/371358/ that Canonical (which runs the development of Ubuntu) has worked out a sharing deal with Yahoo in order to provide more development resources for the future development of Ubuntu. This deal seems rather surprising however considering that Yahoo and Bing just made a deal stating that Yahoo will just be delivering Bing results.

Luckily, if you do not like Yahoo, the default page will change based on your browsers default search settings.

Apple recently announced the iPad, what they claim to be “There most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price”

Now lets dissect the above statement, it is basically a large version of the Tablet PC, running a very large version of the iPhone OS. I do not see what makes it magical or revolutionary. If anything I believe the fact that it is running the same OS as the iPhone very annoying, and I do not believe I would want myiPhone any bigger than it already is. I am not saying it will not be an interesting product to use, I am simply saying that the iPhone OS is designed for smaller screens, instead of trying to make it work on a bigger screen, why not just make a whole new OS specifically for the iPad?

Now as for pricing, I guess if I found a practical use, the pricing would be okay. $499 doesn’t seem too steep for a large iPod touch with 16GB of memory I guess, however the only iPad I really see a practical use for is the one that supports WIFI + 3G and unfortunetly that adds another $129 to the price.

I guess until an actual release, and a chance to sit down and spend some time messing with the iPad I will not know for sure if it has a purpose or not, I guess we shall see.

Oh and I almost forgot, more information at: http://www.apple.com/ipad

It is made to make your Windows Vista or Windows XP/2003 computer to look like windows 7. Unfortunately however it does not support 64 bit Operating Systems, so I have no way of testing it. If it works as well as the Windows Vista one did however I would at least give it a try.

Recently I got an iPod Touch, and began playing with some of its many features. I soon found that if I jailbroke it I could get even more apps totally free and even add more functionality to it. So thus began my jailbreaking research, below is what I have found.

Currently, if you have an iPod Touch that is a 3G or 3GS, you can only have a tethered jailbreak. This means that if you want to turn your iPod back on after you restart it, you will have to plug it back into the computer and rerun the jailbreak program. This does not erase any of your information or anything like that, it just takes time and is very inconvenient if you need to restart on the go. If you have an 2G or 1G iPod Touch or any version of the iPhone however, you can jailbreak and will have an untethered jailbreak.

Now, enough talk, here is how you can jailbreak your iPod. There is a program called blackra1n that came out last month which allows you to jailbreak any iPhone or iPod (and tethered jailbreak the ones mentioned above), and it even jailbreaks it in under 30 seconds. The link to the site is http://blackra1n.com. Here are a few steps you should take when running the program. First, you should kill all iTunes processes using the task manager, and second if you are running vista or above, you will need to run it as an administrator for it to work properly. Once it is jailbroken, you will then be able to open an app called blackra1n on your iPod or iPhone which will allow you to install one of three app managers. I suggest using Cydia.

Unfortunately the iPod I got was one of the newest ones, and an untethered jailbreak is not available for it yet. Fortunately however there is currently a very new program being worked on that will fix that and me and other 3G and 3GS users to ability to have an untethered jailbreak! It is called greenposi0n, and should be released by the end of the year! The link to their website is http://chronic-dev.org/blog. I will be watching it closely for any updates on release dates and shall check back when I find more information.

Please comment!

Wow, you never really realise how much you miss something until you don’t have that much time to do it anymore. That’s how I’ve become with blogging, this is something that I feel is very important to blog about however.

Ubuntu 9.10 has been released, and I must say it is the most incredible version of Ubuntu I have ever seen. Right from restart, my computer seemed faster and more sleek looking then it ever has before. As soon as I logged in, it prompted me to fix a few things that might cause problems later, one of them being my language not fully installed and the other to encrypt my home directory. I fixed both of those, and moved on to my new desktop. The icons have been redone to look much better, and the important things on the top bar are now bold.

When I went to check my mail (I use Evolution) I found that I no longer need the launcher I have placed on my menu, I can not launch it straight from the mail icon located on the top of my desktop, also, I can launch Pidgin, my IM client from the same location. The wireless network connections seems to also have been redone.

For a simple upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 I do believe I have seen the most improvements I have ever seen in an upgrade of a program. This is why I truly love open source software, and seeing what I have simply seen in this upgrade, it has convinced me that when I get a new laptop in a few weeks, it will definitely be running Ubuntu. I would definitely suggest that everyone else out there also at least try’s it out and gives it a chance, you won’t be sorry!

Soon I will be starting a new thing, most people create install walkthroughs using pictures, etc, however I am going to try something a bit different. I’m going to attempt do do the walkthrough in audio form. I am going to try out the first one in about 10 minutes or so. I’m going to start off making ones for cPanel today, and then tomorow I will be doing ones for the 000webhost control panel. So in the mean time, back to work, and I hope this works out.
