So far, in my occasional passing of tech news blogs and sites, I have seen a lot of mention of the iPad. According to http://labs.chitika.com/ipad/ it is estimated that over 1 million iPads have been sold. So far however, I have not seen one in the wild, and have only seen pictures. So what I don’t see is if so many have been sold, what are people really using their iPad for? By the looks of it, they are not sitting at the library, in study hall, or in the park browsing the internet or reading a book on them, so what are they being used for? Do they make a good paperweight? So far I have yet to see.

Curiosity got the best of me this morning when I got on my Ubuntu machine.  When I looked to the address bar and was about to type in the address, I remembered that Ubuntu 10 was in development, and wondered what the start page would look like. So I went to http://start.ubuntu.com/10.04/ and was quite surprised to find that it had Yahoo! Search written in place of the regular Google banner. After a quick Google search, I then found out what was happening. It seems that according to http://lwn.net/Articles/371358/ that Canonical (which runs the development of Ubuntu) has worked out a sharing deal with Yahoo in order to provide more development resources for the future development of Ubuntu. This deal seems rather surprising however considering that Yahoo and Bing just made a deal stating that Yahoo will just be delivering Bing results.

Luckily, if you do not like Yahoo, the default page will change based on your browsers default search settings.

It seems that the creator of the Windows Vista Transformation pack has put out a new version, Windows 7 Transformation Pack. It is made to make your Windows Vista or Windows XP/2003 computer to look like windows 7. Unfortunately however it does not support 64 bit Operating Systems, so I have no way of testing it. If it works as well as the Windows Vista one did however I would at least give it a try.

Ok so the title almost explains it. Soon I will be starting a new thing, most people create install walkthroughs using pictures, etc, however I am going to try something a bit different. I’m going to attempt do do the walkthrough in audio form. I am going to try out the first one in about 10 minutes or so. I’m going to start off making ones for cPanel today, and then tomorow I will be doing ones for the 000webhost control panel. So in the mean time, back to work, and I hope this works out.

Questions or comments, please reply.

Its been so long since I made a blog post, I can’t believe it, I remember when I first started this blog I had almost nothing to do except this. Now I have all my classes plus two forums to administrate and other random jobs here and there to do. Putting all of this together, it has really spread me thin. Since this was the first project I started however, I have a strong urge to keep it going, I’m just not sure how much I can do, but in the mean time, I’ll be digging for interesting topics to write about and post, so happy reading :)

Well it was becoming too much to try to run my new site, http://myfirehost.com and WiredTron without some thing being left unhandled. That is why I haven’t made any new posts here lately. Well now I have made some changes to try to fix that, from now on, MyFireHost forums and WiredTron Forums are the same forum. Also, with one less forum to monitor, it will leave me more time to work on both sites. That, and I will try to finish all the rest of WiredTron that people don’t really know aren’t finished, but really aren’t :)

Not long after the release of Ubuntu 9.04 (which LinuxMint is based on), LinuxMint 7 has been released. It looks like the developers put a lot of work into making this disto an improvement over the last one, with a nice new green spin on things.

Other than a new look, the rest of the work has been done by Ubuntu, stability fixes, etc. So far I have run into almost no problems with this new distribution, except one problem with the sound drivers, which I easily fixed.

If you are already a LinuxMint user, the instructions to upgrade can be found here: http://www.linuxmint.com/blog/?p=861 although it is suggested that you completly refomat your computer when upgrading.

If you are a new user, you can find the download information here: http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php

It seems that yesterday, May, 14th, that google was very slow throughout the whole day, with packets timing out, etc, and a little later it even wouldn’t load. This seems to have been quite a big surprise for a lot of people, as if you go on google (now that it is back up) and google “google down”  you get one hell of a lot of hits! Anyway, it seems that they mis-routed their traffic to an Asian network that couldn’t handle the flood, or so they claim. So far I haven’t quite figured out why they would have done that in the first place.

On a side note, I was talking to someone today and they claimed that someone apparently made a modified version of Conficker, and spread it, and then yesterday used it to ddos google. I am not sure of the factuality of this claim at this time, however I will keep looking to see if I can find any other references to this being what happened yesterday.

Yahoo has been providing their free web hosting services via Geocities for many years now, and is one of the longest standing free web-hosts, but now it seems that its also is leaving the scene before the end of the year. According to Yahoo, they are doing this in an attempt to streamline what services they offer. If you have a site there, you do not have to panic, as you still have until sometime this summer before they are going to close it. There is no exact date mentioned, however I’m sure that as more time passes there will be one.

They did not say why they needed to streamline their services, but I am pretty sure it is for the same reason everybody else is tightening their belt, the current state of the economy. This will be the second of one of the long-standing internet giants to shut down their web hosting service this year. In case you don’t remember, AOL did something similar to this with AOL hometown late last year. When that happened, there was a frenzy of people looking for their files for the many days after the site closed. I am almost positive that this will happen again with Yahoo, unless they make absolute sure that all of their customers know that it is closing, and even then some poeple will somehow get left in the dark. You can see what I am talking about just by looking at the long list of comments containing something similar to “I need my files back. This is crap. You can’t just close it and delete our files!!!” on http://www.peopleconnectionblog.com

It is a shame they are doing this, however they will still be offering a non-free (paid) version called Yahoo Web Hosting. Yahoo Web Hosting Can also be found here: http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/webhosting/ Also, for anyone interested, there are many other good free webhosts out there, a lot of which can be found at http://www.free-webhosts.com/

Please comment and digg :)
